Introduction by mariah
One of the most incredibly horrific events in American history was the Civil War. Two million men marched off to war defending the Union ( North ) . Half that number Defended the Confederacy ( South ). This was lasted for four years ( 1861-1865 ). Although this war was very physical, it was very emotional too. Brothers fought Brothers , daughters was took away from their parents, and fathers was fighting with their own sons. People believe this war took because Northern states and Southern states had a different opinion about slavery. Some states were trying to convince that slavery should be banned but other states didn’t agree. After the war many soldiers was wounded/injured and it was 620,000 lives left. 360,000 died during the war in The Union army and 260,000 died for the Confederate army. When people think of Civil war they think it's men fighting , but what history forget to state is that women is fighting too. by Mariah

Most women was involve in the war in some way. Some women were spies, scouts, prison guards, cooks, nurses, and they fought too. Some women was helping out by working for different organizations... including the Ladies Hospital Aid Society, Refreshment Saloon, the Union Volunteer and the United States Christian Commission. Some women helped by sewing things for soldiers. Also older women prefer to help by through local organizations like churches and hospitals by donating things. Younger women helped by being capable of being more active because they was mobile. These younger women was usually below 30 years old, didn’t have any kids, and unmarried. Although women has equality power as men , women weren't included as equals. They didn’t allow women to fight in the wars. But of course, women disguise themselves as men and served in combat with the others. by Mariah

One of the amazing female soldiers out of them all is Jennie Hodgers, her alias is Albert Cashier. She was enlisted in Illinois. She fought the whole Civil war without being questioned or discovered. She ended up living her life as a man for another 50 years. She even ended up getting a military pension , and ended up living at the sailors and soldiers home. Some people at the home kept her girl secret when they found out. Even though it's pretty crazy that women acted like men , and battled with them … at least they were accepted amongst their peers. This was major respect towards women , because women prove that we can anything men does.
